This booklet is published by the University of Tennessee, Agricultural Extension Department. The information below came from that publication. CBA will work to post timely advice through the coming months. CBA Leadership Team

Beginning Beekeeping Basics

• Start small. Two colonies is an ideal number for an
inexperienced person to keep for one or two years.

• Expand as your experience and confidence grow.

• Start right. Avoid discouraging mistakes at the very
beginning by thorough preparation. Read, read, read
and ask questions of beekeepers and Extension staff.

• Buy new equipment. The experience of assembling
new hives is very informative for the inexperienced
beginner.

• Plan ahead. Order your bees, hives and tools in the
fall. The hives and tools should be delivered in time
to be assembled before your bees arrive the following
April.

• Be ready. When the packaged bees arrive, your hives
should be assembled and located on the site selected
for your apiary.

* Google Beekeeping In Tennessee
Cherokee Beekeepershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13665350234674047756noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9096407763430241308.post-71670213025102961752021-01-21T11:18:00.003-05:002021-01-21T11:20:32.763-05:002021 PACKAGE BEES
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2228; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">We are going to offer bee packages again this year. Make sure your hives are ready, assembled, painted and placed where you will be installing your bees. The hardest thing about installation is getting the feeder can out. Here’s a couple of things that works. A suction cup or magnet works great! Outside of that it should be a breeze. If you need help!
Thanks John White for an evening enjoyed by new and advanced beekeepers

What an action packed meeting Tuesday evening! We started out with John White talking Flora and Bees. We sat in silence taking in all of the information John shared about how bees see, what they see and what flowers (this includes trees) attract bees. Even learning how bees feed almost all year.

John also shared what was native, non-native, poisonous to bees, poisonous to humans. Lots of good questions generated. He has already replied to me and I will have the Secretary email everyone today. John has information about Holly and flowers for the Dearth.

Next, Kellye Bishop shared about different Feeder types. Again, wonderful discussion. I loved that she stated there are as many different types of feeders as there are opinions from beekeepers! ha!ha! It's true we each have our own opinion on what works for us. Thank you Kellye for leading this event!

Then our own Donna Yarber shared a New Beekeeper's Checklist and a Queen Information list. Both of these are forms that she has developed from her own experience and "OCD". She will be talking more about these forms as the year goes, so make sure you bring yours to each meeting. We look forward to hearing more as the year goes.

Lastly, Suzi Drumright revealed the winners of our Hive Grant. Please congratulate: Melissa Coyne, Stephanie Myers and Norman (Roger) McCullough!

It was a great time at the annual short course. Thanks to organizers, guest speakers and attendees for making it a success. Don’t forget our next scheduled meeting will be Tuesday the 28th at the Co-op in Athens at 7:00.

First 2020 Meeting

Thank you to everyone that came out and supported our first meeting of the year! It is hard to believe that it has been 3 months since we have had an official meeting. We had lots of business to take care of for most of the meeting and lots of new beekeepers in attendance.

Of course, we had the challenges of technical support! I loved it! It should show us that beekeeping works the same way. What does that mean? Well, it means that every time you think you have it figured and planned out, that those lovely ladies in the bee world have a different plan. Never stop learning from them.

John Hartman talked with us about what we need to be looking for and what preparations we need to be doing for the next couple of months. We look forward to his words of wisdom at the next meeting.

We had a panel of beekeepers at the end answering questions from the attendees. We loved that each beekeeper had an answer and shared from their lessons learned. The most discussed question was about feeding your bees. So, an action item for our February 25th meeting, is to bring an example of what and how you feed your bees.

Jeff resigned due to increased family business demand of his time. We thank Jeff for his leadership during his short tenure.
A special paper ballot election for president took place during the July meeting. Myron McCleary, a long time active Cherokee member, was elected to finish out 2019.
